Star Stories

The skies of Caenyr are filled with many beautiful and interesting constellations. These are some that can be seen above the fair land of Etaria.

Father’s Eyes

High in the Northern reaches of the sky can be seen a pair of bright blue stars, they can be seen all year round and seem to dim the light of the surrounding stars. Legend says that these are the eyes of the Father of the gods himself, that he miraculously left them there, while he patrols the universe and beyond, to watch over the jewel of Caenyr. Legend also says that one day he will return to claim them and take account of what they have seen.

Dragon’s Breath

A trail of stars forms a centre point to the sky above Chail. Some children claim it looks like a slide, others like a spouting whale. But the elders call it the Dragon’s Breath and tell of the legend of the first dragon. They tell how the 6 attacked and killed him, envious of his powers and they tell how in his anguish and rage he flamed fire high into the air. The universe lamenting over the death of this unique creature took the flames and scattered them as stars in the sky.

The Lovers

Legend tells of a pair of secret lovers, a young man and woman who were denied the right to be together by the culture of their society. They met secretly, pledging and consummating their love in defiance of all custom and tradition. When they were discovered their families disowned them and they were viciously tortured and slain. Their last cries were declarations of love and the goddess Verinia in anger snatched them up and joined them in the skies. Some claim that from a certain angle they can still be seen to be joined in love.

Death’s Gates.

A more recent legend concerns a set of stars that seem to form a cross barring the way to the southern parts of Etaria. Following the fall of Genocise into evil and decay this cross seemed symbolic of a warning to all not to venture that way and the term Death’s Gates was coined by a little known bard who embroidered his tales of sad endings by looming these stars large over the unfortunate ones concerned.

The Farmer's Ward

As the seasons change a series of stars move across the horizon. They are said to be set by Ath’endal’lynn herself to guide the farmer's in their planting and reaping. The histories point to the first farmer, the first to stop the hunter gatherer lifestyle and cultivate his own land to provide food for himself and then for the animals he gathered. This man, his name lost in the annals of history is immortalised in this constellation. Forming the shape of his sickle, it moves slowly across the sky and wise farmers take note of this, rather than the sometimes fickle changes in temperature, to guide their sowing and harvesting.

Wolf's Bane

A set of snarling teeth seen best at the full moon, pierced by a shining lance. Apparently the first werewolf was slaughtered by a brave Lancer as it assaulted a long dead king and had its jaws taken by the god Tyllar and set in the sky as a sign of the faithfulness of the KRL. Parents point to these to warn their offspring of the dangers of wandering alone at night and also to inspire them to set their sights high in loyalty and integrity that perhaps one day they might be worthy to serve as this Lancer did.

First Star

The first star seen in the evening sky low in the east as the sun sets grows brighter and brighter as the evening dims. Children look eagerly for it believing that a wish will be granted to the first one to spot it and wish with a pure heart.

The Dark Star

On the rare occasion that both moons are in eclipse a baleful red star glows high in the sky. Mother's seek to stop their children going out under the light of this star and babes born on such a night are considered cursed in some way.

Qua'ryn's Harp

The harp shaped constellation is seen far in the North of Etaria, bards wish on it for blessings on their songs, some claim to write their best music under its light. It also serves as a mascot for professional gamblers who hope the sweet sound of music will lull their targets to be easy marks.

The Circle of Gods

Not far from the exact east, stands a circle of great shining stars, almost sucking the power of the stars surrounding them. It is said that it is a meeting place for the Gods, when the Watcher's Tower cannot be used. There is no record of when they appeared, but most think that the All-father created the place as a sanctuary for the Gods, to discuss events on our realm.

The Eye of the Balor

The 'Eye of the Balor' is a combination of 5 stars. The first four form the figure of an Eye, and the fifth stands in the middle, which shines with a bright red color... Most think the Goddess of Chaos had taken the eye of her most trusty Balor when he died in combat. It began to appear when the Demon Wars with this Plane were finished... It remains a mystery if Lady Chaos really did it, but Half-Demons enjoy looking at it, as well they feel strengthened when they walk under its bright red color.

The New Star

Unlike other star stories this has a strong basis in fact. Following the events surrounding the rise and fall of Seorsa Ruatha, the mad druid, a new star appeared beside the now visible third moon. The sages say that this star is the dead druid, placed alongside Venturi as a reward, or perhaps punishment, for his part in Melivar's plot to destroy Tyran. The star is dimmed by the light of the moon but is her constant companion, as she wanes, it wanes, but when she shines her brightest, it reflects her glory. The wise pray that she may continue in her role bringing balance between her feuding brothers.
