Fort Avium was first constructed in the year 740AL as an outpost in Tyrania's Untamed Lands. It was originally built as a tower of defence to quell the threat of local goblin and orc communities, and to provide respite to travellers passing through. Due to the severity of sandstorms and harsh terrain, it was quickly discovered that travel to and from the Fort was limited. As such, in the year 748AL, construction began to expand the underground stores to maintain food and weapon supplies.

As the population of the Tyran Empire grew, so did that of Fort Avium. Though there is no knowledge of its population increasing above 40 permanent residents and guards at any one time, a tavern was additionally constructed along with a hostel. The Order of Light is the predominate presence within the outpost. Most other occupants consist of vagabonds, mercenaries and lost travellers.

Sturdy walls made of large stones and battlements provide protection and critical vantage points to maintain defence during the seemingly constant attacks. The barracks are also imperative to the defence and flow of communication within the Fort, and also house the soldiers responsible for rationing supplies.

Once a year, during fine weather, a convey travels through the tunnel pass and onto Fort Avium. Consisting of replacement guards, merchants carrying food and ale supplies, armour and weapons wagons and mercenaries keen to retreat to the Untamed Lands. The convey generally remains within the Fort for two nights before those wishing to, return to the Tyran City.

One healer can be found wandering amongst the populace. There are also no grand shrines to the gods, though personal makeshift ones can be found throughout. Devout Order of Light soldiers and guards primarily worship their gods at these shrines. Generally, the Lady of Chaos and God of Death are the preferred deities amongst the civilians who reside there. For many have either been forsaken to the isolated Fort or retreated there to live out their remaining, miserable days.

There are no records of deaths kept at the Fort. Those that pass there generally have no known kin. Order of Light members remains are returned to the fortress in Tyran, where they are provided a proper burial. There have been no known births within the Fort, at last count the ratio of men to women was 6-1. Visitors are few and far between, many of those who stop in, carry on their travels after a night in a warm bed.

Although the Fort falls under the rule of the Empire of Tyran, there is little need to police the area, and as such, the refuge remains, for the most part, detached from civilisation to this day.
