Master Trees and Barklings

All trees are living. But there are some extremely rare ones in the world of Caenyr that have displayed such an extraordinary life force that they have been alive for impossible amounts of time, some reputedly having stayed alive for thousands of years. And among those, there are some that have stretched their growth even further. They are enormous entities whose branches are said to tickle the clouds, and roots to prod the floors of the Underdark. Having stayed strong through storms, fires, droughts, and countless other disasters, they are said to have attained a cunning sort of intelligence as well as being infused with magical powers befitting of their location.
As of currently, there are three known, or rather, reputed trees of this kind of majesty, located in various parts of Etaria. It is said that a precious small number existed in Tyrania as well, however no one knows what became of them when the empire was invaded by the Sinestrath.
These three trees all have names given to them a long, long time ago by a mostly forgotten clan of druids, but those names are hardly ever spoken by anyone as the history is oral. And yet, without the protection of the druids, these Master Trees live on by the will they have attained from such a long existance- and the creatures that inhabit them…

Bwytawr chan 'r yn Bucheddu Hunau
(Eater of the Living Ones)

This is a colossal and thick tree with black, rocklike bark. Her roots are firmly planted deep below the mud of the Forlorn Swamp. Her form is peculiar, with the base of the trunk decidedly thicker than it would be proportionally, eerily reminiscent of a bloated belly. The rocklike bark is impossibly thick and tough, covered in a slime-like sap execrated from small cracks in the tree’s otherwise strangely smooth surface. The sap gives off a pleasantly sweet scent that gets harder to resist the closer you get. As her branches are bare all year around, this one takes no nutrients from the sun, but rather receives energy from the creatures charmed and tempted to lick her poisonous sap. Strewn into the muddy shallows surrounding her are bones and rusted armor from all sorts of unfortunates, animal and adventurer alike. She is said to exude poisonous gases in the rare event that she feels threatened.
On the few safe paths leading toward this tree are various objects of monetary value, such as coins, magical trinkets, and oddly well-preserved weapons. Those are left there by someone living symbiotically with the tree, a swamp elf by the name of Karr. This elf receives shelter and food in exchange for luring more victims in the direction of the tree by employing a number of tricks. He lives in a concealed burrow beneath a surface root, not even shy of feeding members of his own race to the hungry tree.

Naill 'n Dal cara Chymylau
(The One Tall like Clouds)

Once upon a time, a long time ago, he was a normal pine tree. But this one, located within the Magical Forest of the Etaric, has grown to an almost ridiculous height. Despite having no branches that could ever be reached by a human, he can be climbed, as the colossal pine’s bark is rough enough that birds can nest inside the cracks. And there are many birds around this pine. Thousands of feathery creatures inhabit him at various altitudes, and it’s even said that sometimes, adolescent green dragons perch on the massive branches. The entire tree seems to be in various shades of green, from the needly leaves the length of a grown man’s arm to the moss-covered trunk and the surface part of the roots covered in grasses. Indeed, he is even said to give off a greenish glow during the night. Yet, this beauty may be wasted on mortal eyes as merely looking upon the tree fills one with a vertigo-like sensation and an underlying dread, filling the beholder with the desire to leave the place. This does not seem to affect the local wildlife or particularly strong-willed individuals. For the latter however, there is a second line of defense.
A number of very large predatory birds also live among his branches. Their feathers seem to be made of foliage grown from barklike skin, creatures reborn for the sole purpose of guarding this pine. They are tireless and need no food, as they draw sustenance from the rain and by soaring underneath the sun’s rays. Selflessly, these barklings guard their home.

Ddwfn i Mewn i 'r Briddo , 'n Dragwyddol Buchedd
(Deep Into the Earth, Eternal Life)

The third one is a Master Tree not easily seen with the naked eye… because most of it is beneath the ground. Throughout Tendril and even reaching out into surrounding areas is an intricate network of roots. These roots have had thousands of years to expand and grow, the tree only peeking above the earth as modest shoots where the sun filters through the canopies above. These shoots are pale white in color with dark green leaves. If left alone, a shoot will quickly grow to the height of a man and blossom. Her flowers are a vibrant pink and when they wither, she bears fruit. Juicy, black, plum-like fruit with a distinct earthy yet sweet taste. These fruits are normally quickly eaten by forest creatures and greatly boost the vitality and fertility of wildlife. Believing the shoots to be individual trees, attempts have been made to dig them up and cultivate them, but the shoots quickly die if separated from the main body of roots, and as the fruit is seedless, planting them is useless unless the purpose is to speed the recovery of damaged soil.
Lately, there have been rumors of a white tree growing beyond the usual height of the shoots, resembling a large birch but with entirely white bark, eternally going through a cycle of bloom and bearing fruit. The soil around this tree is incredibly fertile and bushy, but approaching it is no easy task. It is fiercely guarded by a huge boar-like animal, a beast with barklike ridges on its back, flowers and grasses growing from its body. Feeding on nothing but fallen fruit and lush grasses, it has managed to grow into a fearsome size, and will not tolerate the presence of other living creatures, attacking relentlessly unless somehow convinced to share the space.

Details on Anifeiliaid Chan Arthia (Animals of bark/Barklings)
A barkling was once an ordinary animal that has taken on the characteristics of a plant. Some Master Trees can produce a special type of seed that, when eaten by a living creature, will grow within them and become one with them. A barkling typically doesn’t need to eat, though they are still able to, but rather absorb nutrients in a plantlike manner from water and from the sun, and they have no need for sleep. They are also very sensitive to impurities in their environments, to fire, or anything else that a plant should be wary of. Barklings created by Master Trees have a deep connection to their tree and so they will not willingly leave its vicinity, fiercely protecting it.
Barklings can also be made ‘artificially’. By magically altering the seed of a plant that is not a Master Tree, a living being can be made into a barkling with the traits of that plant, but the process is very difficult, if not draining on the mage or druid performing it, and without the purposeful guidance of a Master Tree’s energy, the plant is likely to kill or permanently disfigure the recipient rather than bonding with them.

((I have used an online Welsh translator for the names. Apologies for any inaccuracies.))
